Test for hydrogen

Hydrogen test

Hydrogen is a flammable gas, so it can be identified by bringing a lit splint to the open end of a test tube containing the gas.

If hydrogen is present, it ignites quickly and produces a characteristic squeaky pop. This sound, rather than burning alone, is the positive result for hydrogen.
