Photosynthetic reaction

AQA·Biology (Separate Science)·4.4.1.1·Foundation

Photosynthesis

Photosynthesis is a process in which light energy is used to make glucose, a sugar. Chlorophyll absorbs light, providing the energy for carbon dioxide to react with water. The products are glucose and oxygen.

The word equation for photosynthesis is:

carbon dioxide+water→glucose+oxygen\text{carbon dioxide} + \text{water} \rightarrow \text{glucose} + \text{oxygen}

Endothermic reactions

An endothermic reaction takes in energy from its surroundings overall. This energy is transferred to the reacting substances.

Photosynthesis is an endothermic reaction. Light transfers energy from the environment to chloroplasts, where it is used to synthesise carbohydrates. Energy is stored as chemical energy in the carbohydrates produced.
